Carbon footprint

This page shows a list of the flights I have taken in my life and their approximate carbon footprint, and my progress towards becoming flight carbon neutral.

Carbon emissions over my lifetime.

Carbon emissions over my lifetime, equivalent circumnavigations of the earth (at the equator), equivalent CO2 emissions and required planted trees.

Progress towards flight emissions neutrality

My current lifetime flight emissions are equivalent to 64.3 tonnes of CO2 from 156 flights covering 286850 km. Each tree absorbs the equivalent of around 640 kg of CO2 (based on around 16 kg/year and a lifetime of 40 years, taken from trees.org), so I would need to plant around 100 trees to offset my emissions from flights. So far I have intentionally offset 0.87 tonnes of CO2 (approximately 1.4 trees).

Flight list

The distances are for return journeys where appropriate, and equivalent CO2 includes the take-off and landing portions (hence it is not directly proportional to distance). The distances are taken from myclimate.org and the CO2 emissions are taken from the goclimateneutral API.

Some notes and disclaimers:

  • The "from" and "to" columns contain IATA airport codes. Stop-overs are not shown but are included in the calculations.
  • My footprint started to explode once I started by PhD studies, and accompanying conference and workshop travel, in late 2012.
  • I've assumed when we flew from home, it was from Glasgow. It could easily have been Edinburgh or elsewhere. We definitely flew from Prestwick a few times too.
  • I've probably forgotten some stuff, particularly recently (I've travelled a lot for work) and in the early days.
  • The emissions estimates are from 2019. Planes have become more efficient and so the early emissions are probably underestimated.
